Tips and Rules for Using Academic Voice

There are a few rules that you must follow when using academic voice.

  • Use formal language: Academic writing should be proper and precise. Avoid using colloquialisms, slang, and contractions.

- DO NOT use "bro, guy, dudes, etc."

  • Use third-person point of view: AVOID using the first-person point of view (I, me, my) or second-person point of view (you) in academic writing. Instead, use proper nouns and a third-person point of view (he, she, it, they) to present a more objective and formal tone.

  • Avoid using "that" unnecessarily in your sentences.

  • Also, DO NOT start a sentence with a conjunction or "because."

- conjunction is "for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so."

  • DO NOT use contractions: Avoid using contractions in academic writing, as they are too informal.

- common contractions that are used are "don't, aren't, isn't."

  • Use specialized vocabulary: Use technical vocabulary related to your field of study to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the topic.

  • Write in the active voice: Writing in the active voice makes your writing more precise and concise. Avoid using passive voice unless necessary.

  • Avoid using emotional language: Emotional language can be seen as unprofessional in academic writing. Try to remain objective and neutral in your writing.

Following these steps will help ensure that your essay is informative and neutral.
