Fahrenheit 451 By Ray Bradbury

Updated: Aug 14, 2022

This is undeniably one of my favorite novels, and it is a great novel to use to introduce a dystopian concept to the classroom. Although it is far removed from our reality, it gives the reader a glimpse of what people can do when they are allowed to live with very few boundaries.

I would also cover how societal expectations significantly impact our behaviors. This would be great to pair with high school students who are just beginning to cover introductory psychology and social studies in their classes.

The following resources provide a great working point to adjust and fit your class.

First, there is a PPT that goes through an introduction of the era and atmosphere that inspired Ray Bradbury's work and later on through several themes present in the text.

Here are a few examples of themes that are present in the text.

`Individual self-expression is essential.

`Violence is self-destructive.

`There is no change without sacrifice.
`Humanity can be reborn or revived.

In addition to a PPT, here is a packet that can be printed all at once or in various sections. I would recommend printing the whole thing and assigning certain sections as homework and other exercises to be done in class.

Sadly, there are no definite markers on what questions are for what parts of the book, but the novel also lacks definite markers or chapters and only has sections. So, please be careful when assigning homework and ensure that the students can answer the questions with the reading they have done or will do.

The reading workbook offers a variety of activities in addition to reading comprehension.
